Hibernation mode has set in full force. Seems like it takes a great amount of energy to accomplish anything, especially blogging.

New Years was rung in at a friend's house. A small gathering but fun conversation, plethora of food and movies.

New Years Day was spent being ultra lazy. Trek to the grocery store was the only accomplishment.

The next day we had Christmas re-do at the lake. That was nice and I finally got to have Christmas turkey. Tons of food again.

This work week has seemed the longest ever. Thankfully its almost over.

On the down side, no 12th Night for me. Plans fell through. I suppose I could have made new ones but with the weather being all craptacular and not feeling up to par I decided to stay home. Sad to miss seeing everyone but there is always the next event.

I did manage to see Sherlock Holmes over the Holidays. Rachel N.and I had a nice dinner out and then to the movies. I enjoyed it. I need to see it again tho. I do agree that Rachel McAdams was miscast. She seemed out of place.

I also caught the end of David Tennant's run as Doctor Who. I felt it was a bit lack luster. But then I felt that way about all this season's episodes. I read several reviews of the show that did improve my opinion but I do feel they could have done better. This snarky review made me laugh.
www.televisionwithoutpity.com/show/doctor_who/the_end_of_time_part_ii.php Full of spoilers!!!!
I guess we will see what Matt Smith can bring to the show.   Looking forward to it.

500 years ago, merchants abutting Bushy Park in London were required to pay a "deer tax," a compensation for any deer which left the park. Today, the tax is still in effect and taxpayers are getting restless.

Blog posts done. A lousy 2K written, which means without working on Saturday there’s no chance of hitting 50K this week. But at least I got 2K, which is largely thanks to Kate and to Laura Anne, who logged in to look stern at me. 4 chapters copyedited, so I’m picking up a little speed there.

That is all.

I apparently blistered myself, yesterday. *hmph*

So. Blister + Ankle + Lack of Sleep + Lack of Motivation (probably because of the not sleeping well) = No Walking, today.

Tonight there will be sleep, and tomorrow there will be walking.

There was a small item in the Guardian this morning about author Marian Keyes, who posted on her website about her crippling depression.

I wanted to salute her for being open and explaining what she is going through. So many people still do not understand that depression is not a matter of mere disposition or a weakness in character. People with depression cannot "shake it off" or "pull themselves together". Often it's those with depression who are hardest on themselves, especially if they're in good circumstances, like Marian Keyes.

I hope that this will encourage people who have been suffering in silence, thinking that they're just weak-willed or spoiled because they feel sad inside all the time no matter how many good things happen to them, to get help. If you're reading this and you're one of these people: try talk therapy, try medication, and keep trying. Many people have had good results with a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and anti-depressants.

If you had a broken leg, you wouldn't stumble around on it--you'd go have it taken care of. OK?

My credit union is based in DC. In the most recent statement insert, they included the following:

Dormant Account Reminder: Save Your Assets
If you have accounts with us that have been inactive (that is without transactions other than dividend deposits) since at least January 1, 2009, please activate those accounts now to avoid incurring an inactive fee of $25 that we assess at the end of each year. Also, please be aware that after three years of inactivity and annual $25 fees, we must turn over your account funds to the D.C. government.
The "interesting" thing of this is that we also have money in a bank not based in DC, and they never include this sort of notice with the statements. I checked.

This post prompted by a recent article at WTOP, D.C. sues AT&T over calling card balances.

While in high school, I read 1984 while all the others were reading Animal Farm ('Because it's short'). So I wanted to read this one and I finally bought it last week.

I knew the story from the animated film I had seen years ago. But I do not really mind being spoiled. Books are more than plot points for me.

Still, I forgot how Orwell's prose worked on me... He can write heavy scenes with an ease that makes you go "Wait, what happened?" I tried to uncover the complete analogue with communism, but my knowledge of it's history still isn't good enough. I've read quite a lot about the early history of the revolution and the Stalinist administration. I haven't read much about the problems within the different communist ideologies that vied for the title of THE COMMUNISM.

It was a good read, maybe a little lighter than 1984, the end of which still freaks me out.

Apparently the difference between coming straight home after going to the gym and running errands before coming home is a huge whacking loss of motivation for getting my ass into the chair and writing. Actually, my ass is in the chair, it’s just that I’m not writing. I’m pretty sure it’s not that the book’s screwed up (other than being fairly certain I need to cut 10K from the 42K I have written), and is just plain ol’ don-wanna. So I’m procrastinating in a variety of ways, many of which involve staring at a 2010 calendar and being disappointed that there continue to be merely four months between now and May. One more would be a nice buffer. And of course every minute I’m not writing is another tick off the ol’ clock, upon which there is already not quite enough time. Writers, they amn’t too smart sometimes.

I need to write two blog posts today. I mean, other than this whingy one.

Holidays are mostly over. Jet goes back to school tomorrow. Life may resume a more modest pace.

Please.

I don't think I've been doing much, but, as usual, when I look at it I do a *headdesk*. Since we got home from Taos, we've mostly been cleaning up the house so that the cleaners could come today and not wade about in a morass of wrapping paper, flung toys, and snow gear. We've been playing with our toys and eating food and exercising. The snow is falling again, and I had fun digging out the sidewalk and driveway. It's a good workout.

We all got H1N1 flu shots as the local clinic was in good supply, and at $10 a pop it didn't hurt even if we thought we'd gotten it. I've been riding the bike like a good girl and watching Ghost in the Shell 1 and 2 (the Innocence). The Innocence was clearly an art-flick, and the number of aphorisms was astonishing, and I loved learning that they got a *Chinese* calligraphy master to do the poetry.

My dad's a linguist of some 60 years study, since he was born in China, and lived most of his young adult life, there, his first language is still a dialect of Fukanese (Taiwanese) first, and then Mandarin. During our trip home, he expounded some on his theories about the difference between the written language of China and those of Europe.

Liked it. Needed an edgier actress for Irene Adler--Claudia Black? Diana Rigg via time travel? Could've used more Watson. And this might be the hardest to explain: it needed an ordinary person for a client, an individual whose life would be transformed by Holmes and Watson. It wasn't as exciting as Iron Man, but I'm more likely to see this again than Iron Man. The important part commercially: I'll be there for the next one.

Have I went on an I hate winter rant yet this year? Because tonight is a perfect night for it. This weather may keep me from making the trip down to Three Rivers fighter practice tomorrow. [info]fagangthepure has his armor with him from Vegas and I had planned to fight him! It has been far too long since I have been able to cross swords with him. In fact it has not happend since he became my son in law last year. I am planning on making the two hour trip down and back tomorrow night to make sure we got to fight while he was here and now the weather might be too bad. The weather is never too bad in the summer! And because of the time constraints, I can not just take my time and drive down slowly. It is either good or it is not :(

Did I mention I just hate winter?

I hope it clears and I get to fight him and other Three Rivers people.
