I stopped on the way home at the grocery store, where I marvelled at the new Sonic. (They've been running ads for Sonic in our area for years, but haven't bothered to build any in the state. Now they're popping up like mushrooms.) Errands done, I went home and set up for gaming. It took a little while due to technical issues (getting the laptop to talk to the camera and then talk to Ben was astonishingly difficult), but eventually we got underway.

Gaming )

Tonight Laura is scheduled to do something with Ginger. Tomorrow night is fighter's practice in Madison as well as the Funky Formal, Thursday night is the local fighter's practice, and Friday night the Faire people are going to Irish Fest. Saturday is apparently Plague Day at the Faire (aka, a zombie crawl), as well as the RESCU Rally fundraiser.

And so like that.

Tonight and tomorrow night we have no plans - though I might have to buy pants. We've got Stargate to watch and at least three episodes of Burn Notice, plus enough BBC tv to choke a horse. Or, um. Something like that.

Tonight Laura and Ben have doctor's appointments, and I plan to watch hockey. Tomorrow night nothing is planned. Thursday night is fighter's practice, and Friday night is Border Skirmish (and Jeff will be here). And Ben graduates on Saturday.

And now, on to work!

Last night we went home, had dinner, cleaned, and gamed. (Neither Kat nor Karl were there, so I played the Cleric and the Sorceress as well as all the NPCs.) The Game )

I suspect that I'm getting sick, based on my general feeling of malaise and heat in my face and extremities. (The person with whom I climb the stairs every work day told me to stay at my desk, so I am.) We'll see, as the day goes on.

We have no plans for tonight. Ben leaves for Minneapolis tomorrow, for his second regional Robotics competition. Thursday night is fighter's practice, Saturday is Coronation in Madison. And that's currently our plans.

Tonight we have no plans, but we have five or six episodes of Burn Notice to watch. Along with Buckaroo Banzai and other video goodness. And computers to play with, and books to sort, and bookcases to plan. Tomorrow night I'm scheduled to do something with Todd, and Thursday is fighting.

And work is busy, busy, busy.

Over the weekend we watched some tv and played some computer games, and cleaned and did things around the house, but mostly we sat around and read books. Laura zipped through the first two books in the Soldier Son trilogy, while I devoured Cory Doctorow's Little Brother. And we did laundry and all the normal weekendy stuff. Ben spent Saturday at robotics and Sunday hanging out. And overall it was a nice break from work.

Last night we gamed.
Dark Priests! )

Tonight, and for the rest of the week, we have no plans. This weekend is Flesh Wound, and I really ought to go fight on Wednesday to prepare for that. And now, more work.

Last night we gamed.

The party reassembled to meet with the Militia. Mytch the Miller pledged that he would join the group in their assault on the Temple, and three of the mercenaries - the Captain, Burne, and Rufus - did as well. The other half of the militia opted to stay home to protect the village in case of additional raids or attacks. Some of the party - specifically, Daisy the Barbarian, Anasha the Sorceress and her familiar Riki, Jim the Fighter, and Jebidoh the Cleric - then visited the local trading post to restock. They found a few magical items, and employed some creative haggling techniques to acquire them at the lowest possible cost. As they wrapped up they discovered that one of the two merchants had apparently fled out the back door, and we wrapped up with them deciding to follow him.

We'll play again next week.

Last night I went home and helped Ben finish cleaning up the Christmas stuff to make space for our guests. And soon our guests arrived, and we played D&D.

The game )

Tonight we have no plans. Tomorrow night - New Years - we haven't really discussed, but I suspect that we'll sit at home and watch things on DVD. (We've been invited to a few parties and to dinner/drinks at Safe House, but don't really want to be that social. Hmm. Maybe we should honor the fall of the mighty VHS - I could bring in lots of tapes from the garage and we could watch older stuff.) Thursday I have the day off, and I expect to relax around the house. I'll either take Friday off and relax more, or go in to the office and find things to do. (I've actually cleaned off my desk, mostly, and it looks ... cleaner in here.)

Last night we went home, then did all the pre-game cleaning. Ben went to a friend's house after school, and from there caught a ride to the community service thing, so we had dinner without him and got ready to play.

The Game )

This community service concept is new to me, but is apparently a big deal in the Wisconsin school system. The NHS 'so you want to join the Honor Society' presentation we went to made a big deal out of it, and Wisconsin colleges and universities apparently require that prospective students perform a certain amount of 'community service' in order to do be eligible to attend their schools. Where I come from, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts (and Girl Scouts, for that matter) did things to help out around the community, or volunteered for charity events or functions. But we didn't have a big fat label of COMMUNITY SERVICE to slap on it. Community Service is what felons receive as punishment for minor infractions - Emilio Estevez had to do community service when he was nailed for drunk driving, and wound up coaching pee wee hockey. Adam Sandler got busted for something or other and had to coach basketball. In real life, George Clinton received 200 hours of community service when he was busted for possession of cocaine. It's not something that somebody does voluntarily, or something that *everybody* does. And apparently here everybody does it so frequently that it falls into a nice neat bucket. "I'm off to do community service." "Have a nice time, dear."

Tonight is Curia. Tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday nights we're Ben-less as he has robotics, robotics, and a LAN party. Saturday is Bardic Madness in Chicago. And the beat goes on.

Last night as I was making my way home Ben arranged the living room. We had seating for nine people and a computer hookup for the tenth. When I got home we hooked up the webcam to my laptop and installed Skype, and tested everything to get it all ready. And rearranged a few things, and started dinner. Laura informed us that she was in Galveston with Ginger and Maritabeth, so she wouldn't be calling in at 6:30; she hoped to be in a place to call by 8 or so. Ben laid odds that we wouldn't start until then anyway.

Jenny and Karl arrived at 6 and threw pizzas in the oven. Shannon arrived at 6:45ish, so we watched Doctor Horrible while we waited for the rest of the crowd. Around 7:25 - just as the finale began - Kat, Todd, Tiffany, and special guest star Jeremiah turned up. We got everybody situated and more pizzas, and actually were ready to go around 8:15. (So Ben was right - but Laura wasn't available until later, so his actual bet - that Laura would call in before we were ready to start - was still not quite right. She did eventually call in, and then used her cell phone as a modem to connect via the MUD. Which split my attention between the group and the computer. Which didn't work as well as I would have liked.)

The game... )

After the game we cleaned the place up and went to bed.

This morning I took the car in to get the headlights looked at, and discovered that Prius headlights are about $425 EACH to replace - the entire housing has to come out, a process which takes an hour or so. So I figured we can live with the headlights until they burn out. Though Laura has yet to weigh in on that decision. I did get the oil changed and the tires rotated, though.

Tonight Ben has a doctor's appointment, and at the same time is the Baronial Planning Meeting (which I might miss). The rest of the week ought to be spent doing Halloween things.

Kat mentioned last night that the best night for Fright Fest is Friday, because Saturday and Sunday the JPM team is expecting lower attendance so they're going to have smaller street crews. Unfortunately, she's already given away her comp tickets, so I can't get in free... but maybe after trick-or-treating at Todd's I'll head over to Great America. Or maybe not. Plenty of time to decide.

Last night I stopped on the way home to get lettuce and coffee creamer. At home, I muscled the loaner mattress out of the living room and onto the porch, then Ben and I put the living room back together. He used the new vacuum (which does a really fabulous job) on the floor and the couch, and we set up the room for gaming.

The party picked up where they left off, in the clearing surrounded by dead bandits. They travelled a little farther before reaching a graveyard, which was oddly constructed. The graveyard itself was set into a hill, with the center of the hill at the center of the graveyard. The path led through the heart of the graveyard, marked by great iron gates at the entrance and exit. These gates were opened, and attached to stone pillars, but the pillars were not attached to any wall; the gates were, essentially, free-standing. The party opted to circle the cemetary to the south. Along the way they encountered and dispatched a few swarms of rats. When they finished their circle, they decided to investigate the cemetary after all.

At least one of the graves had been emptied, and Alain the Priest (the local guide) informed them that though the prevailing local religion dictated that bodies be buried, some individuals followed different burial rites which allowed them to disinter the bodies and dispose of them in different ways. An oddity which struck the adventurers was that, though there were many grave markers, none of the markers had any actual markings on them. Jim the (Dwarven) Fighter examined the markers and declared that they appeared to have once had names carved into them, but that the carving had been erased. This appeared to be the case for all of them except one, labelled 'Margot'.

At the top of the hill was a cairn made of flat stones, stacked carefully. The dwarf determined that beneath this cairn was a vertical shaft. Jim and Daisy the Barbarian moved the stones, revealing the entrance to this shaft, and Daisy lowered Jebidoh the Cleric down to determine what was below. He discovered a sarcophagus in the center of an otherwise empty room. He was joined by Jillian the Rogue, and later by Anasha the Sorceress, and as they were exploring other things were going on - the sarcophagus began glowing with a blue light, and various party members began to detect rustlings from the graves. Not surprisingly, this began to happen as the sun set. The blue light from the sarcophagus seemed to come from the gems set into the corners, and after careful examination Jebidoh determined that the entire device was set up as a giant necromantic battery. He decided to remove these gems, and did so without incident; they ceased to glow as they were detached. The three of them opened the sarcophagus and disintered the body inside, carefully removing all magical artifacts from it as they did so, and the body crumbled to dust. Satisfied that it was no longer a threat of any kind, they returned to the surface. The party decided to camp just outside the graveyard, setting a watch as usual.

After the game we went to bed. Tonight we have no plans, though Laura tells me she has homework to do. Tomorrow night at 9 I have to do some remote server stuff. Thursday night is a Boar's Head meeting which we might be exempt from. (Which reminds me, we need to call about flower prices.) Friday night we have tickets to see Saltimbanco.

Not to seem too zealous about it, but I think I'll try digging a trench next to the house this weekend. I'm also slowly building a list in my head of things to do around the house - various nicks in the woodwork which should be puttied and painted, some shelves to put up, repainting the stairs and staircase to the basement. Little things like that. I'd like to head into the winter months with the higher-temperature-tasks already tackled. (That is, paint wants a certain temperature to dry. So I should paint when the temperature is naturally that high.)

Last night we got home and sent Ben out to buy Oreos. (He's running for Computer Club President today, and wanted to be able to buy the votes of the 'We like free stuff' lobbyist group.) And cleaned a little, though Ben had already done most of the necessary cleaning. And ate dinner, and got ready for D&D.

Shannon arrived first, and Karl not long afterwards. (Jenny stayed home to study for her exam.) We levelled up Karl and waited for the others to arrive. Kat and Todd came in later, so we levelled up Kat and worked on Todd's character.

Game! )
After the game, we wrapped up for the night. We'll play again in a couple of weeks.

Tonight is Curia. Tomorrow is free. Thursday is the last evening outdoor fighter's practice of the summer. Friday is also free, though Frodo Fest is happening that day. Saturday I'm participating in a fighting demo there, as well. I may also schlep some boxes with Todd, as his girlfriend moves in with him. And Sunday is blessedly empty.

Last night we grabbed dinner at GPs on the way home (I really like their chicken caeser salad, in case anybody wondered what we *eat* there), then ate in front of the tv. Rearranged the living room, and prepared for our guests.

We began our gaming session by working on characters - levelling up and creating a new one. I sat with Shannon for a little while, working on Granny Mabel the Monk, and with Kat to discuss Anasha's advancement. Jim got a quick debrief, and Daisy had a chat with her deity. Jillian met with the heads of her guild, and Jebidoh chose to work on his advancement outside of game time.

game details )

After everyone left for the night, we cleaned up and went to bed.

Tonight is Curia in Brookfield. A friend just told me about a new restaurant called Agave up there, which sounds ... intruiging. Tomorrow and Thursday, nothing's brewing. That I know of. Yet. I haven't moved anything to the basement since Friday's flurry of activity because almost all of what I needed to get done on that front is done, and the porch is at least tidy, but that doesn't really mean that I'm *done* with the process. So I should finish at some point.

As a side note, the bard wrote a song to encourage the fighters:

'Kay, guys, let's go,
Let's beat this guy up.
Go do some brave stuff
And try not to suck.

(chorus)
Don't be not awesome,
Don't be not cool.
Get up, go do stuff,
And totally rule.

Bravery and courage,
These and more are yours.
Go and beat the bad guys,
And with them mop the floors.

(chorus)

Now you guys are rockin',
Looks like we're gonna win.
So let's finish it up,
And bash their heads in.

(chorus)
-----
After we were all finished, we went to bed.

It seems that tonight my wife has plans with Ginger. Or, maybe not. I'll give Ginger a call today (Laura will be too busy at work to do so) to clarify. I need to run some stuff out to Matt and Kymm's. Tomorrow we have no plans.

I did the stairs this morning with just one of the developers (one was late, the other's legs hurt too much). She doesn't use the handrails and takes the stairs two at a time. I didn't use the handrails for the first ten flights, and took a break at 25. (I've been using the handrails the whole time and taking two breaks - one at 20, one at 30.) So, that's progress.

The King )

After the game, everyone went home and we went to bed. The plan for the rest of the week is:
Today, during the day, determine whether or not the electrician will be at the house tomorrow. (They cancelled last week because of the heat, and the forecast looks okay to *me* but I don't know their requirements.) If they say they won't be coming, paint the basement floor tonight - primer coat before I go to Curia, final coat when I get home. And in between, go to Curia.
Tomorrow the electrician should be at the house around 7:30. Shawn should arrive around 8 to help spread out and spray down the OC walls and, potentially, move some furniture upstairs and downstairs. When everybody's gone, I'll go to my mom's house to get the last bit of stuff from there. Then home, and out to Denise and Larry's for dinner. Thursday night we still don't have anything planned, but I really need to mow. And move things out of Ben's room, if we have shelves and whatnot to move it all to. Friday Laura and Ginger are - as I understand it - going to spend the day visiting Gurnee and Schaumburg. And Saturday is Faire.

Dr. Horrible is fantastic.

Last night we got out of here late because of lingering effects of personnel not following orders.

From our CIO:
(Data deleted).

It took us all afternoon and into the evening to recover from this. (Actually, we haven't completely recovered yet.) But it meant leaving work late. Fortunately, Roisin's plane was delayed in landing and we timed our departure perfectly - we got to the airport just about the time she picked up her first bag. We circled a couple times while she got her other bags and met us on the curb. Home, then, where she grabbed her keys and went home for a hot shower. And we went in to game. Which was interesting as it happened, but not very interesting to relay. Details here. )

After game we pretty much went to bed. Tonight I'll try to vote, and I want to hit the gym. Tomorrow is the dentist, Thursday is the doctor, Friday is driving to Appleton.
